How Fielding ADU Torrance Was Born in Torrance

When we opened the Torrance branch, the South Bay was already talking about ADUs. The state had cleared the path, the city had updated its rules, and homeowners were calling around trying to figure out who could actually build one. What they kept running into was the same frustration: contractors who would show up late, hand them a vague estimate, and then send a price change halfway through the job. Torrance deserved better than that. This is a city of people who pay attention to detail, who notice when a fence line is off or a roofline doesn’t sit right. They don’t want a sales pitch. They want somebody who shows up when they said they would and does the work the way it was promised.

So we made a decision before we ever took our first local job: every homeowner gets a written price before any work starts. Not a ballpark. Not a verbal “we’ll see how it goes.” A number on paper, in advance, that doesn’t move at the door. We brought The Garrison Standard with us, because that’s the only way we know how to work. And we set out to be the ADU builder in Torrance that people don’t have to worry about. Not the cheapest. The one they can count on.

Reed Calloway’s Personal Connection to the ADU Trade

Reed Calloway came up in this work the old way. He spent years on job sites before he ever ran one, and the lessons that stuck with him weren’t the ones from a classroom. They were the ones you learn standing in a foundation trench at six in the morning, feeling the marine layer burn off, watching a layout line get snapped and knowing if it’s square or it isn’t. He learned to read a framing plan the way you learn to read a room: by paying attention to what’s there, not what you wish was there.

The draw of ADUs specifically came later, but it came hard. Reed watched the state change its laws and watched homeowners light up at the idea of a rental unit in the back, a place for their parents, a studio for a grown kid who couldn’t afford to move out. And then he watched too many of those same homeowners get burned by builders who treated an ADU like a side project. That bothered him more than anything: the gap between what people were promised and what they actually got. He wanted to close that gap.

What gets him out of bed isn’t the framing itself, honestly. It’s the moment when a homeowner walks through a finished ADU for the first time and goes quiet for a second, just taking it in. That’s the part he works for. If he weren’t building, he’d probably be teaching the trade, maybe at a community college or a union hall, because the thing that actually drives him is passing along the standard: do it square, do it permitted, do it once.

Meet Reed Calloway – The Person Behind Every Job

Reed Calloway is the Owner & Founder of the Torrance branch. He’s spent his working life in construction, most of it focused on residential work across Los Angeles County, and he’s seen enough corners cut to last a lifetime. That’s why he runs this branch the way he does.

Reed isn’t a guy who sits in a truck and phones it in. He walks the jobs, checks the layout, and talks to the crews about what’s coming next. He’s the kind of person who shows up early because being late would mean breaking his own rule, and he takes that personally. Outside of work, he’s a woodworker, the kind who rough-cuts his own stock and finishes pieces slowly over weeks. He’ll tell you that building an ADU and building a table have the same first step: you have to care about the square before you do anything else. His commitment to customers is simple: if his name is on the branch, the work has to be something he’d sign off on for his own family.

Our Promise to Torrance Homeowners

Every promise we make comes from a specific failure we’ve seen too many times, and every policy exists because of it.

Price in writing before any work starts. We don’t do verbal estimates that evaporate. You get a written line-item price, and that’s the number. If a surprise comes up mid-job, you hear about it before anything changes, never after the fact.

Do it by the book, the first time. Permits get pulled. Inspections get passed. We don’t ask homeowners to “look the other way” on anything. In Torrance, building code enforcement is active, and we like it that way. It means the work either meets the standard or it doesn’t, and ours does.

Stand behind the work for a full year. The Garrison Standard covers every job: if something fails within that year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s not a slogan. It’s the agreement, and it’s in writing.

Our Credentials

  • State-licensed general building contractor. Every pro working under our name is required to hold the license the state requires. This matters because it means the work is tied to a standard that gets checked, not just a promise nobody can verify.
  • Insured and bonded. Again, required of every pro under our name. If something goes wrong on your property, you’re not left holding the bag.
  • Local leadership with deep construction experience. Reed Calloway has years on active job sites across Los Angeles County. This matters because an ADU isn’t a paper project. It’s concrete, framing, roof covering, and electrical, and someone on site has to know all of it.
  • A reputation built on discipline, not volume. We don’t track a customer count or post a giant review wall. We just work the same way every time, and the phone keeps ringing because of it.

Why these credentials matter to a homeowner: the person you let into your backyard is going to be there for weeks. They’re going to know your gate latch, your side yard, the way the sun hits the back fence. You deserve to know they’re legitimate before any of that starts. Licenses and insurance are how you check that.

Rooted in Torrance

We work across the South Bay and the Harbor Area: Redondo Beach, Harbor City, Lomita, the beach cities, and the neighborhoods in between. But the branch is in Torrance, and we treat the city that way. You’ll see our trucks around Delthorne, Old Torrance, and the neighborhoods off Crenshaw and Hawthorne, not just parked at job sites but at the same coffee counters and lumber yards everyone else uses. We buy materials locally when the suppliers can meet our spec, and we plan our days around the same traffic everybody else sits in on the 405. That’s not a branding strategy. It’s just what it means to work where you live.
